retro fashion love

One day when I'm super good at sewing I'd love to make my own clothes. Lately I have been really drawn to retro and vintage styles, which is quite different to the jeans/top combo that has been the standard for most of my 20s. Must be time to embrace my inner 'lady!'

I have always loved dresses and skirts for summer and feel inspired by all the lovely florals and soft cottons out there. There are lots of options for sewing pretty vintage styles and I think I could tackle a few A line skirts and simple dresses for the warmer months without too much trouble.

Here is a collection of gorgeous dresses and accessories to inspire me into action!

Book- Sew what you love- by Tanya Whelan

Today I discovered the work of a fabric designer/writer Tanya Whelan of Grand Revivial Designs. I stumbled upon her while looking up pictures of fabric on Pinterest, and didn't even realise she was the creator of one of my favourite fabric ranges called 'Deliah'.

She has a new book coming out in December called 'Sew what you love' It looks like it has some really pretty and easy projects like summer dresses and purses. Right up my alley of course. :)

Sew what you love, Tanya Whelan

If you want to pre order it you can do so through Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Might make a lovely Christmas present for someone special. :)

Too much fabric!

Ok, I think it's time I admitted I have a problem with buying fabric. I'll bet a few of you are reading this and slowly nodding as you think about your own heaving crate of fabric/wool/felt/beads/pretty paper or whatever else it is you guiltily hide from your loved ones anywhere you can.... I'm onto you!

Here are some beautiful pics of fabrics I'd love to roll around in:

I am so in love with different textures and patterns in fabric. I can always see a use for things so the purchases are usually really well justified, however, since I live in a small flat and the second bedroom is already piled high with my crates and bags of fabric and notions, I think it's time to stop buying and start some serious making.

Lucky for me, Christmas is looming so I can set myself a little goal. I think I might look into having a little market stall somewhere in November too. We'll see. It's hard to get too excited about selling things when we are in the grips of global financial doom and gloom and people don't really seem to want to spend money. Having said that, people always want to buy lovely things for the people they care about for Christmas so maybe there's room there for my little things.

So the next step is working out what kind of things to sell, gathering patterns and getting started. I need a plan.... Not always my strong point, but I did find some help for writing a business plan from Tricia McKellar on her blog Wonder Thinking. Her blog focuses on building your creative business and when you subscribe to her newsletter, she sends you a wonderthinking plan-o-rama. I haven't looked at it yet because I'm lazy and like to operate more haphazardly than that.... but I probably should or I'll spend another month thinking, 'where on earth has all my time and creative energy gone?'

This blog was supposed to be here to hold me accountable, and it has worked to an extent- I'm definitely sewing more than I ever have and I'm loving every minute. I guess it's just at that point now where I need to see if I can get it from hobby/gift sewing to something more, whatever that may be.

If you have any thoughts or inspirtation for this, I'd love to hear it!

Holiday times.....

Hello lovely crafty people.

I will be on holidays in Cambodia and Thailand for the next two weeks so I will be decidedly absent from the Blogging Sphere!

Happy sewing times, see you soon!

Purse Week- a lemon squeezy home

I just stumbled across this fun looking purse contest on a Lemon Squeezy Home. Since I am a lover of purses and bags (mostly because I can't sew much else!) I think this would be a good one for me to have a go at to test out my creative bag making skills.... if I have any!

The entries from last year were just gorgeous! From the top 10, I liked these two the best:

Bowling Bag from Lifestyles with Love
How cute are the pigs and apples? I had a look at the Lifestyles with Love website and there are so many cute little purses with gorgeous Kawaii fabrics and Zakka prints. Sweet!

Beautiful fabric and style. I love a clutch. So chic!

I might have a go at making a clutch too. Maybe with some pleats and a zippered section. We'll see!
